stripes

by John
(Newcastle)

I have been plastering for over ten years and over the past year I have developed a problem when skimming. When I skiiim stripes begin to appear and it takes a great effort to get them out and resort to skimming side ways. I am not doing anything differently. Has anyone else experianced this?

Answer
I have not had this problem or heard about it from anyone else. When you say 'stripes' do you actually mean just colour shading or is there an actual difference in texture or flatness? if so all I can suggest is to let the 1st coat firm up sufficiently so that it can be flattened off totally. Then when applying the 2nd coat keep it nice and thin and plenty of pressure on the front of the trowel to ensure the join to the previous section is kept flat.

I have to say I am quite intrigued now to find out exactly what the problem is, so would be good to hear back from you your thoughts regarding my suggestion.

Never ever had a problem on all backrounds ,Until i did a job few weeks ago , once troweled up it looked spot on , customer was delighted n that . Few days later onced it dried i noticed few stripes . Felt bewildered
Been plastering 18 years . Finish is very good . Always used same method .
Just really annoyed really .
Multifinsh ive noticed goes abit like jelly nower days . Takes too long to go off for final dry trowel, even 40/60 m2 gauges im waiting round .
Gotta be the product as ive been reading whats other lads have been saying

Cold weather thing?
by: Nathan

I'm not getting the same problem now that the weather is starting to get warmer. I'm back happy with my finish now but I haven't changed anything in how I'm going about my sets. Obviously it's going off slightly quicker so the sets tend to be 15-30mins quicker but other than that same approach. Anyone else finding it's just a cold weather problem?

Im having the same problem aswell. Been plastering 5 years and my finish was extremely good until lately, then when I wet the wall slightly right near the end of my set i'm just getting tiger stripes, especially over board. Tried various different approaches lately and different trowels and its not helping. Not good at all and is really pissing me off

Ribbing on backing coat.
by: Brendan bowman

Been plastering 35 years and same problem it's a nightmare.put first coat on flatten off then when I put second coat on it ribs up on backing coat and have to trowell at least ten times and still can't get perfect

I'm also convinced there's a problem wit the plaster
I'm a perfectionist and it's getting me down. Multi and board finish the same probs. 07793810257.
If anyone else has this problem. Bren.

Hi i'm a plasterer similar probs at times, gone back to old carbon steel trowels as in the past, think these new flex steel trowels dont help and stainless bring water and sheen up,flex trowel really late almost dry, which is'nt easy on decent sets

Tiger striping absolute nightmare espec in winter on site work it doesn't matter if the first coat has taken up or soft they just appear and no amount of troweling up can get rid I've been plastering 29 yrs and its making us look like amateurs um convinced British gypsum have messed with how they produce the finish now as I never had this problem yrs ago
